About mukto.net
A not-for-profit association that runs a shared Linux server, teaches, and holds meetups, for anyone in Bangladesh who builds with free software.
The name
মুক্ত (mukto) means free, open, set loose. Bangla calls free software মুক্ত সফটওয়্যার, and that's where we took it from.
How it started
The first plan was small: one shared Unix machine, a tilde server, where everyone gets a shell, a home directory and a web page, and learns by poking at what the neighbours built.
Thirty-eight people came to the founding adda on 13 June 2026 and wanted more than that: classes, install-fests, translation sprints, a place for local open-source projects. So mukto.net became something closer to what Framasoft is in France, with the shared server still in the middle of it.
What we hold to
- Free software only
- Everything we run is free and open source, configuration included.
- No ads or tracking
- The status bar at the bottom of every page counts cookies and requests to other sites. Both should read 0.
- Built for here
- Bangla and English, events outside Dhaka, prices in taka, and a server in Dhaka, so it's fast from here.
- Rules written down
- A short code of conduct and a page of rules, applied by people you can name.
- Only what we can keep running
- Four services run today. More come when there are volunteers to look after them.
- Working with other groups
- Several Linux and FOSS groups were here before us. If one of them needs a server for a workshop, they can ask.
What we aren't
A company, a hosting provider, or production infrastructure for your startup. Nothing here is for sale.
Who we learned from
- SDF, the public Unix system running since 1987
- tilde.club and tilde.town, which made shared Unix boxes fun again
- hashbang.sh, for signing up from the terminal
- envs.net, a pubnix that grew a whole set of services
- Framasoft, for free services and teaching as a public good
